SeeWhy Designer

SeeWhy Designer is a graphical design studio that makes many metric configuration tasks accessible to business rather than technical users. One of the key features of Designer is to allow you to 'hot deploy' new and modified metrics into a running stream of events and begin monitoring immediately.

Designer allows users to easily configure all the metrics and calculations for the Actual and Expected values for each Metric and its Dimensions. Shown below are some screen shots which should give you a flavor of the approach.

Configure Metric Calculation

You can see here the ability to configure the metric calculation and the associated timescales, thresholds, triggers and filters that can be applied.

Once selected, the Dimension will inherit the calculations already defined at the Metric level. So with one definition, you can create complex monitoring calculations for millions of unique items such as product codes, accounts, customers, IP addresses, RFID events, trades and counterparties.

Configure Metric Expression

This screen lets you select from a wide range of standard arithmetic and statistical functions, including averages, smoothing and many other advanced techniques. Functions may be combined to deliver powerful analytical capability. The functions can be applied to both business events and the results of other metric calculations, easily selected from a drop down list.

Configure Expected Calculation

Creating the 'Expected' calculation has the same flexibility including added functionality for defining tolerances. This gives each 'Expected' value a range in which the comparison between 'Expected' and 'Actual' is acceptable; values outside of this range may trigger an alert or action.

Tolerances can be expressed as Absolute and Percentage or can be derived from results of other metrics.

Configure Dimension

Available Dimensions are taken from the event data. Examples include: Sales Value dimensioned by itemcode (UPC), store or operator, credit card or loyalty card, etc. In financial services this may be: trades by currency, company, buyer, seller, counterparty - whatever is relevant to your monitoring scenario.
